The Anambra State Chapter of the Nigerian Red Cross, in collaboration with the Awba-Ofemili Development Union (ADU) Health Committee, has concluded First Aid training for 60 volunteers comprising 50 students and 10 teachers of Community Secondary School, Awba-Ofemili.
The training, held as part of activities leading to the Awba-Ofemili Health Awareness Campaign 2026, was facilitated by Mr. Michael Chukwura and Mrs. Adigwe Adaobi of the Nigerian Red Cross.
The participants received practical instruction in basic First Aid administration and the proper use of First Aid boxes, equipping them with essential skills for responding to emergencies within the school and community.
Speaking on the training, the Chairman of the ADU Health Committee, Ogbuefi Chinenyeze Remmy Nweke, KSM, commended the Anambra State Chapter of the Nigerian Red Cross for its partnership and technical support, describing the exercise as an important step towards equipping young people and teachers with basic life-saving skills.
He also appreciated the management, teachers and students of Community Secondary School, Awba-Ofemili, led by the Principal, Lady Maureen Chika Muodozie, for their cooperation and active participation in the programme.
The Chairman noted that the initiative builds on the First Aid boxes earlier donated to schools across Awba-Ofemili by the ADU Health Committee, with strong support from the President General of ADU, Hon. Chukwunedu Fidelis Mebene, and other supporters.
“This is a practical demonstration of what we mean by moving beyond awareness to action. We are not only talking about health; we are putting simple, life-saving resources and knowledge in the hands of our young people and our community.”
The initiative also involved members of the ADU Health Committee, including Mr. Cornelius Nwakonobi, Secretary; Prince Kenneth Akabueze, Partnership Liaison; Barr. Emeka F. Obidigwe, Legal Adviser; PC Nnatuanya, Publicity Officer (PRO); and Hon. Chukwunedu Fidelis Mebene, President General, ADU, among others, under the leadership of Ogbuefi Chinenyeze Remmy Nweke, KSM.
The Chairman disclosed that the First Aid training would be extended to other students and schools across Awba-Ofemili, in line with the committee’s broader school-health and preventive healthcare programme.
Certificates of participation will be presented to the volunteers during the Awba-Ofemili Health Awareness Campaign 2026 on Thursday, 17 September 2026, at the Civic Centre, Awba-Ofemili.
The campaign, themed “Beyond Elu-Ulee (Buruli Ulcer): Building a Healthier Awba-Ofemili,” will feature community health education, Buruli ulcer awareness, preventive healthcare, basic health screening, First Aid activities, health counselling and referral, as well as stakeholder engagement.
The ADU Health Committee expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Red Cross, the school management, teachers, students and all partners whose support made the training possible, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening practical health education and preventive healthcare across Awba-Ofemili.
