-By Divine-Favour Efemena

In a swift reaction due to information making the rounds about increase in electricity tariff by the Distribution Companies (DisCos), the Nigerian Senate urged the Federal government to suspend the propose hike so as to cushion the effect of Covid-19 pandemic.

This was followed by a motion filed by Senator Gabriel Suswan on the power sector and the impact on the economy due to Covid-19.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in April has suspended the plan to increase tariff from April 1 to July 1 2020 following the heat of Covid-19 pandemic. The lawmakers are concerned over the current economy situation and concluded that July 1 deadline is not proper as the pandemic still ravages the country.

According to Suswan, “The Covid-19 pandemic has further impacted negatively on Nigerians and the economy.”

The Senate was of the view that it was not unaware that the sector needs proper funding hence it calls for the inclusion of the power sector in the proposed N1.7 trillion Covid-19 Crisis Intervention Fund.
