In what appears to be major push to integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) values into Nigeria’s energy landscape, one of Africa’s fastest-growing oil exploration and production companies, Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited (SEEPCO), has launched its flagship “Global Sustainability Campaign.”

This positive initiative is themed “Bringing Smiles with Each Barrel.” It was unveiled in Lagos and attended by industry leaders and media executives.

Sterling Oil described the campaign as a defining step in the company’s journey towards building a more inclusive and sustainable future through measurable social impact.

Commenting on the initiative, Aveek Binkam Biswas, Head of Corporate Communications of SEEPCO, said the company “takes pride in flagging off this project where its joint initiatives and impact will get their deserved voice. Without speaking loud, the company will continue to bring sustainability initiatives together channel every effort into a purposeful movement – one that brings real-life transformational activities for smiles that sustain.”

SEEPCO Converts 90% of Vehicle Fleet to CNG

As part of its contribution to gas, SEEPCO has also deepened its commitment to environmental sustainability, with over 90 per cent of its heavy and light vehicle fleet now running on compressed natural gas (CNG).

The company’s transition to gas-powered operations earned it the Sustainability Company of the Year Award at the 2025 NAEC conference held in Lagos.

In recognition of its sustainability milestones, the company was honoured “for its continuous commitment to recent sustainability initiatives.”

SEEPCO was recognised for its impactful environmental programmes aimed at aligning operational performance with environmental responsibility.

The company stated that “among its initiatives is a clear emphasis on green energy transition, with over 90 per cent of its heavy and light vehicle fleet now running on compressed natural gas.”

It added that “in its eco-friendly marine operations, the major fleet of operational barges has been upgraded to double-hull structures, significantly enhancing protection for rivers and aquatic ecosystems.”

Sterling Oil further noted that it “has achieved a significant reduction in routine gas flaring by converting more waste gas into usable energy.”

The company said its broader sustainability initiatives include:

“The deployment of state-of-the-art recycling machines across its sites, each capable of processing 100 kg of waste per hour.”

SEEPCO pointed out that its afforestation programme targets the planting of 10,000 trees annually, supported by an integrated network of green infrastructure of over 1,000 sqm of green nets nurturing over 25,000 seedlings, with additional greenhouses under construction.

According to the firm, these efforts are reinforced by “round-the-clock teams and the use of native species, achieving an impressive 60–80 per cent tree survival rate, a rare feat in large-scale tree planting.”

Sterling Oil believes true success is measured by positive impact. Its commitment goes beyond compliance; it is about shaping a better, safer future aligning its progress with sustainability at every level.
