…Government is committed to eliminate flaring

Gas flaring is an issue of concern as flaring emits dangerous pollutants which are hazardous to human health in the environment, to put an end to this menace, the House of Representative Joint Committee on Gas Resources Environment on Climate Change had a public hearing on the need to end flaring in Nigeria.  

The Minister of state for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva and other key players in the oil and gas industry pledge to collaborate in order to achieve the goal.

The Minister said, “the Ministry of Petroleum is committed to the elimination of gas flaring by 2025.”

According to the Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mallam Mele Kyari, “we are aware of the problem created by gas flaring in the country and what it does to the environment and communities. These problems will go away because it will be taken care of.”

The House Committee is also to investigate into the level of devastation of gas flaring and regulatory compliance by multinationals in the petroleum upstream sector.

Representatives of the host communities expressed concern that flaring has deprived the communities of the economic benefits of full utilization of gas resources in the country.

They urged the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, NNPC and other regulatory bodies saddled with responsibilities in the petroleum sector to end gas flaring in Nigeria to ensure stiff compliance. They call on the government to ensure a safe environment for the people.

The lawmakers through legislative actions and bills with effective oversight believed they would achieve expected results.
