Speaking during his good will message at the third edition award ceremony of Energy Times, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu welcomed nominees and awardees at the event.

Governor Sanwo-Olu was represented by the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Engineer Toriola Abdulafiz Gbolahan.

“Critically looking, the energy sector in Nigeria is key to the development of the nation, particularly in Lagos.”

Toriola is the Supervising Permanent Secretary in Lagos State, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

The governor was given the Governor-of-the-year award and considered his award coming from a platform that continues to celebrate excellence, innovation and leadership in the energy sector.  He conveyed his acceptance of the award on behalf of the government and good people of Lagos state.

“This revolution belongs not to one individual but to many stakeholders across the public and private sector to strengthen and transform energy.”

According to the Permanent Secretary, Lagos needs over 6000 megawatts but the state gets less than 1000 megawatt and there is a challenge which all stakeholders must solve together with the government. The State government is doing what it can by bringing private investors to Lagos to ensure the problem is solved.

Energy remains central to the country and also to Lagos State development agenda empowering, drive the industry and underpin its long term ambition for sustainable and inclusive growth. “For this reason, the state remains firmly committed to ongoing reform expanded investment opportunity and deeper collaboration with the sector.”

The governor spoke on the new reforms in the energy sector from the federal government that energy was under exclusive list but it’s now concurrent where the state and federal can legislate. This has been made possible with the enactment of the 2023 Electricity Act of the federal government which Lagos state has also replicate by enacting a law called Lagos State electricity law of 2024.

Lagos State has also established a lot of structure to ensure that it implement the law by coming up with establishment of Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

While progress is being made, the governor is also mindful that the journey is ongoing. Lagos will continue to focus on improving reliability, expanding access and building resilient and efficient energy ecosystem that serve both resident and businesses.

Sanwo-Olu views the award not only as recognition of efforts but also as an encouragement to do more in terms of collaboration with all partners committed to advancing energy security and development.

The Governor thanked the organizer for the honour and assures them of his new commitment to a stronger and sustainable energy future for Lagos state.
