In a bid to improve sanitary conditions in the education sector in Rivers state, the Rotary Club of Rumuomasi has delivered a Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene project at the Community Senior Secondary School Rumuomasi.
The Club constructed toilet facilities, water borehole, water tank, hand wash basins, and taught students how to wash their hands with soap.
President of the Rotary Club of Rumuomasi Rotarian Sam Fort said the project will improve sanitary condition of students and teachers in the school.
He said, “We did our needs assessment and realized the pressing need for a WASH project here. We find out that over two thousand population of students and teachers in this school occupy here without water. We believe that this project will uplift the sanitary hygiene of the school and we hope the students and teachers will now have a conducive environment for teaching and learning. We look forward to doing more to positively impact their livelihood.”
In appreciation, the Nye Weli of Oropoto Eze-Orlu Community Rumuomasi, Eze Raymond Emenike-Chinda JP, described the WASH project donated by the Rotary Club of Rumuomasi as philanthropic.
He said “for haven been done without the community’s financial assistance, its sacred, philanthropic and we are very very happy. We thank Rotarians for this gesture. This will solve the issue of going outside the school to get water. As a community, it’s a plus to us”.
On his part, District Governor of the Rotary International District 9141, Mightyman Aye-Dikoru while commissioning the project, said “Clean water and sanitation is a human right. When people, especially children, have access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, they lead healthier and more successful lives.”
“We don’t just build boreholes and walk away. Rotary members integrate water, sanitation, and hygiene into education projects. When children learn about disease transmission and practice good hygiene, they miss less school. And they can take those lessons home to their families, expanding our impact.”
The Rivers State Secondary Schools’ Board representative, Dr Mrs Harry commended the Rotary Club of Rumuomasi for the gesture, describing it as a timely project.
