The National Bureau of Statistics has revealed that the nation’s electricity supply dropped by 3 per cent in the third quarters of 2023.
The supply which stood at 5,909.83 (Gwh) in Q2 of the same year reduced to 5,731.60 (Gwh) in Q3 – showing a decrease of 178.23 (Gwh).
This is contained in the bureau’s report titled ‘Nigeria Electricity Report Q3 2023,’ which covers energy billed, generated revenue and consumers by distribution companies.
According to the report, “Electricity supply was 5,731.60 (Gwh) in Q3 2023 from 5,909.83 (Gwh) in the previous quarter.
“However, on a year-on-year basis, electricity supply increased by 14.09% compared to 5,023.96 (Gwh) reported in Q3 2022,” the bureau reported.
It also revealed that the number of electricity consumers in the country has risen to 11.71 million in Q3 2023.
This indicates an increase of 240,000 consumers as compared to 11.47 million users in Q2 2023, showing a 2.08% rise.
The report stated, “On a year-on-year basis, customer numbers in Q3 2023 rose by 7.09% from 10.94 million reported in Q3 2022.
“Similarly, metered customers stood at 5.68 million in Q3 2023, indicating a growth of 3.77% from 5.47 million recorded in the preceding quarter.”
The NBS added that on a YoY basis, “this grew by 13.07% from the figure reported in Q3 2022 which was 5.02 million.”
The bureau noted that in 2023 Q3, estimated customers increased by 0.53% from 6.03 million when compared to 6 million in Q2 2023.
“On a year-on-year basis, estimated customers increased by 2.02% in Q3 2023 from 5.91 million in Q3 2022,” it stated.
The report also noted that in 2023 Q3, electricity distribution companies generated N260.16 billion in revenue from N263.08 billion in Q2 2023.
