LUTH Records Landmark Achievement After Successfully Delivery of Couple’s 8-Year Wait

The Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), has once again proven its clinical excellence by successfully managing and delivering an incredibly rare, life-threatening abdominal pregnancy. An abdominal pregnancy is a rare, life-threatening form of ectopic pregnancy where a fertilized egg implants within the peritoneal cavity, outside the uterus and fallopian tubes.

This milestone achievement marks the birth of a miracle baby boy born to Mr. and Mrs. Bolarinde, a couple who had waited eight long years for this moment. Both the mother and her newborn are in perfect, radiant health following the watchful care of LUTH’s medical team.

The family’s journey to LUTH began after they were referred by their family physician to the hospital under the care of Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Dr. Akinajo and her team. The patient’s medical history presented a significant clinical challenge. Following In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), she recorded positive urine and blood pregnancy tests, yet multiple ultrasound scans performed consistently revealed an empty uterus. After further extensive and specialized investigations, the family physician diagnosed an abdominal pregnancy, a rare and potentially fatal condition in which the the pregnancy develops outside the womb, often attaching to vital abdominal organs. Recognizing the complexity of the case and the associated risks to both mother and baby, the physician referred the patient to LUTH for advanced specialist care.

Upon arrival in April, LUTH immediately mobilized its specialized resources. The patient was admitted to Ward C4, which became her home for months. Under the rigorous, round-the-clock monitoring of LUTH’s medical team meticulously managed the high-risk pregnancy, carefully balancing the mother’s safety while allowing the fetus to grow to a viable delivery age.

The culmination of this months-long effort in Ward C4 was a masterclass in multidisciplinary healthcare. Delivering a baby from the abdominal cavity is one of the most complex and dangerous procedures in modern obstetrics. However, LUTH’s highly coordinated medical team executed the delivery with flawless precision.

The entire LUTH community shares in the overwhelming joy of the Bolarinde family as they hold their healthy baby boy. The hospital management is deeply gratified by the warm commendations from Mr. and Mrs. Bolarinde, who praised the doctors, nurses, and the entire hospital workforce for their exceptional service and dedication. For LUTH, this triumphant outcome is not just a victory for a family after eight years of waiting; it stands as a proud testament to the world-class clinical expertise and unwavering commitment to saving lives that defines the institution.
