The Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), has awarded its annual research grant to three outstanding resident doctors, to aid their career and academic growth.
In a statement on Friday in Lagos, the hospital said the grant scheme, now in its second year, invites resident doctors to submit research proposals, which were rigorously screened by the LUTH Research Committee.
Three successful recipients who were awarded the grants were: Dr Anita Idise from the Department of Paediatrics, Dr Ikwenu Evewero, Department of Medicine and Dr Naiyeju Joseph, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Chairman of the LUTH Research Committee, Prof. Adesoji Ademuyiwa, revealed that the committee received six applications this year but only three met the criteria.
Ademuyiwa noted that interest in the research grant was steadily growing across LUTH’s departments, and he expressed deep gratitude to the hospital management for prioritising academic growth.
To ensure research projects are executed to completion, Ademuyiwa outlined a milestone-based disbursement structure of the grant.
“Initial funding (75%): disbursed immediately to enable the researchers to kickstart their projects without delay.
“The final funding (25%): released upon successful publication of the study in a reputable journal, featuring a formal acknowledgement of LUTH’s sponsorship,” he said.
The Chief Medical Director (CMD), LUTH, Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo, commended Ademuyiwa and the committee members for their meticulous evaluation process.
Adeyemo highlighted that the grant directly supports the hospital’s core mission, which stands firmly on three central pillars:
“LUTH’s foundation is built upon three inseparable pillars: Patient Care, Training, and Research.
“While we strive daily to provide top-tier healthcare and equip the next generation of medical professionals, it is through robust, evidence-based research that we truly push medical boundaries and discover local solutions to global health challenges.” Adeyemo said.
The CMD emphasised that high-quality, impactful research was impossible without sustainable funding.
He congratulated the grant recipients, urging them to maintain rigorous ethical standards, manage their resources diligently, and ensure their final findings were published to benefit the wider medical community.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
