The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nigeria Council successfully hosted the 49th Nigerian Annual International Conference and Exhibition (NAICE 2026) from 3–5 August 2026 at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria, under the theme “Thriving in the Evolving Global Energy Landscape: Collaboration, Growth and Resilience.”

The conference brought together policymakers, regulators, industry leaders, academia, investors, researchers, students, and other stakeholders from Nigeria and across the globe to deliberate on emerging opportunities and challenges facing the energy industry. The conference featured keynote addresses, topical workshops, executive panel sessions, technical paper presentations, poster sessions, exhibitions, leadership programmes, and strategic networking engagements.

Following extensive deliberations, the conference reached the following observations and recommendations:

Key Observations

1. The global energy transition continues to reshape the petroleum industry, requiring operators to adopt innovative technologies, strengthen collaboration, and improve operational resilience.
2. Nigeria possesses significant hydrocarbon resources capable of supporting economic growth; however, sustained investment depends largely on regulatory certainty, fiscal stability, and efficient policy implementation.
3. Indigenous operators have become major contributors to Nigeria’s upstream petroleum industry and are increasingly assuming responsibilities previously managed by International Oil Companies (IOCs). Continued capacity development, technical excellence, and access to financing remain essential to sustaining this transition.
4. Operational efficiency, digital transformation, and technology deployment are now critical drivers for improving productivity, reducing operating costs, and maximizing asset value across the energy value chain.
5. Investment decisions are increasingly influenced by transparent governance, predictable regulatory frameworks, attractive fiscal policies, and confidence in long-term policy consistency.
6. Strong collaboration among government institutions, regulators, operators, service companies, academia, financiers, and host communities is fundamental to building a resilient and globally competitive energy sector.
7. Human capital development remains one of the industry’s greatest strategic assets. Continuous professional training, mentorship, succession planning, and knowledge transfer are necessary to develop the next generation of energy professionals.
8. Leadership excellence founded on empathy, diversity, inclusion, emotional intelligence, and employee well-being enhances organizational performance and long-term sustainability.
9. Women continue to play increasingly strategic roles across technical, managerial, and executive leadership positions within the energy industry. Expanding opportunities for women will strengthen innovation and organizational effectiveness.
10. Research and innovation remain indispensable for addressing emerging technical challenges in exploration, production, energy security, environmental sustainability, and digital transformation.
11. The presentation of 435 peer-reviewed technical papers demonstrated the growing research capacity of Nigerian universities, research institutions, and industry professionals while reinforcing the importance of industry-academia collaboration in advancing petroleum engineering knowledge.

Conference Resolutions and Recommendations

The Conference therefore resolved that:

1. Government should continue to strengthen the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) by ensuring regulatory certainty, transparency, and consistency in fiscal and operational policies.
2. Regulatory agencies should maintain stable and predictable investment policies that encourage long-term capital inflow into Nigeria’s petroleum industry.
3. Indigenous operating companies should continue investing in technology, digitalization, innovation, and workforce development to improve operational excellence and global competitiveness.
4. Industry stakeholders should deepen collaboration in asset development, financing, infrastructure sharing, knowledge exchange, and technology deployment to maximize resource utilization.
5. Oil and gas companies should prioritize operational efficiency, production optimization, cost reduction, and sustainable asset management over mere asset acquisition.
6. Financial institutions and investors should develop innovative financing mechanisms that support indigenous operators and accelerate field development projects.
7. Universities, research institutions, and industry should strengthen collaborative research programmes that address practical challenges confronting Nigeria’s energy industry.
8. The industry should continue to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and leadership development by creating more opportunities for women and young professionals.
9. Organizations should institutionalize mentorship programmes, continuous learning, leadership development, and employee well-being initiatives to build resilient and future-ready workforces.
10. Digital technologies, artificial intelligence, automation, data analytics, and advanced engineering solutions should be increasingly adopted across the petroleum value chain to improve productivity, safety, accountability, and decision-making.
11. The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nigeria Council should continue to provide a credible platform for technical knowledge exchange, professional development, policy dialogue, and collaboration among all stakeholders.

The Conference expresses its profound appreciation to the Federal Government of Nigeria, regulatory agencies, industry operators, sponsoring organizations, exhibitors, technical committees, academic institutions, speakers, panelists, volunteers, and all delegates whose invaluable contributions ensured the successful hosting of NAICE 2026.
