Owing to insinuations making the rounds that adulterated, substandard or Off-Spec Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) also known as fuel was imported into the country by four companies which caused damages to vehicles and industry engines.

Some of the companies mentioned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), involved in the importation have refuted the allegation.

One of the companies mentioned as the main importer of Off-Spec PMS, Brittania-U Nigeria Limited, has also refuted the claim that it imported adulterated fuel into Nigeria.

According to the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Brittania-U, Catherine Uju Ifejika, said, the Oil and Gas company which activities transcends the upstream, midstream and downstream is impeccable without any foul play in its transactions.

Ifejika explained: “The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) cleared our mother vessel MT TOM HiLDE in line with the product specification as per appendix 1 of COMD’DSDP agreement as executed by EMADEB consortium. The acceptance of the Appendix 1 and the terms and condition is binding on parties. Going by the test as conducted by NUPRC/PPMC officials. The following was cleared and within the contract terms and condition.”

“The product that we delivered showed that COMD sulphur content for product to be delivered was 0.05 while the sulphur content of PMS product that was delivered by Brittania-U was 0.0179, this was low but within the NNPC/COMD quality range.”

“The Appendix 1 did not contain any METHANOL as part of the property and this cannot be added after product had been imported as per specification as given by NNPC/COMD delivered at Nigerian port, which was duly cleared.”

“In view of this, Brittania-U product delivered is in line with the NNPC quality specification. I find it a bit absurd that our consortium and us are linked to this problem which should not have been.”

Therefore, the company never imported Off-Spec products as claimed in publications making the rounds since imported products met NNPC quality requirements.

However, with these explanations, it remains a puzzle how adulterated PMS was imported into the country since companies that were mentioned in the importation have cleared the air exonerating themselves from the products.

It is hoped that the real culprit maybe revealed in the coming days as Nigerians await the outcome while scarcity of PMS bites harder.
