Bayelsa Community Groans over Oil Spill, Destruction of Farm Produce, Aquatic Lives

Residents in Bayelsa community groans over oil spill that destroys farm produce and aquatic lives. Natives of the community were seen scooping oil from the water claiming that every year they have been suffering from spillage arising from leaked pipeline. They disclosed that the oil spill has become a recurrent decimal destroying ecology of the area threatening the livelihood of the people. They lament the lack of basic amenities in the community and what they could get in return is oil spill. Many of them are fisher men and farmers as oil spill often contaminate water causing food scarcity around the community. It was a gory situation as they await government and multinational oil companies to rescue and tackle the menace.

Environmental experts said the oil spillage will affect the health of the people and wondering why relevant authorities are not responding to the situation and plight of the community. The leaked pipeline has a devastating effect on water which is the only source of livelihood for the people and adjourning communities.

Unfortunately, real cause of the spillage is not yet known whether it is equipment failure or human sabotage until the outcome of a joint investigation to ascertain the cause of spillage.
