Tinubu Confers National Honours, $100,000, Housing Rewards on Super Falcons for WAFCON Triumph

President Bola Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu on Monday conferred national honours on members of the Super Falcons and their technical team following their triumphant outing at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Receiving the team at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu praised the players for their “indomitable spirit of resilience, determination and courage,” noting that their victory in the final against host nation Morocco was a moment of immense pride for the country.

Nigeria defeated Morocco 3–2 in a thrilling finale to clinch a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.

To reward the team’s achievement, the president conferred on all 24 players and the 11-member technical crew the national honour of officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

He also announced a monetary gift of $100,000 (in naira equivalent) for each player and $50,000 for each member of the technical crew.

In addition to the cash awards, President Tinubu gifted each team member a three-bedroom flat, a gesture applauded as one of the most generous in recent sporting history in Nigeria.

Before delivering his remarks, Tinubu received the WAFCON trophy from team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

In a lighter moment during the event, the president admitted that he did not watch the final match live.

“I didn’t want to have high blood pressure,” he said with a smile, drawing laughter from the audience.

The Super Falcons’ latest triumph reinforces Nigeria’s status as the dominant force in African women’s football.

Their unbeaten run in the tournament and the standout performances of players such as Ajibade, Chiamaka Nnadozie, Michelle Alozie and Esther Okoronkwo earned them widespread accolades across the continent.

The reception at the villa follows earlier promises by the president to celebrate the team, which he described as “a pride to your generation.”
