GOCOP and Me – 11

Happy New Day!

Just another few moments of your time to reflect on where we are and where we should go with the GOCOP election around the corner.

If we take the time to reflect on our coming to become members of the GOCOP family, we will definitely realise that one or two reasons stood out for us to make that decision. Looking back now, the extent to how that desire had been realised is better known to all in different proportions.

But is it possible to have a GOCOP where we can all be involved,  have a say and make contributions on what we particularly desire and still achieve win-win for all?

The GOCOP we have today didn’t happen by accident. The past leaders including the outgoing ones have served to the best of their abilities to bring us this far. This awareness demands that we ask where do we go from here knowing that progress cannot just be about desire or entitlement. It has to be earned as we all know that faith without works is dead.

As the Financial Secretary of GOCOP for two terms during the Dotun Ladipo administration, I was privileged to have laid the foundation for a transparent accounting system and left the doors open for the current/out going Financial Secretary to learn the ropes and grow in the job such that today we have a template that guarantees a well audited account with a robust cash-flow, such that the outgoing administration will not need to exercise any fear of leaving money behind.

While in every administration, the President will always get the limelight, behind the scene are dedicated  officials and contributors that get the works done. When I exited the exco as the Financial Secretary in 2021, the current/outgoing President Maureen Chigbo persuaded me to remain in the Conference Committee where I’ve been serving with other selfless members to stage successful annual conferences year after year. A member few days ago reminded and commended me that there were years when I was pursuing about 15 corporate sponsors for GOCOP conference which eventually brought in a couple of millions into the kitty. In fact, I’m the first to bring in a corporate sponsor to this GOCOP 2025 Conference despite a very short notice, while few others had come after that with those that couldn’t get early approvals still assuring that their supports will come after the event.

If I’m trusted with the presidency of GOCOP, my strategy will be to expand the sponsorship base for GOCOP conference to have sub-committees such that those with contacts in insurance or banking or maritime or aviation and others will have their own separate groups to source sponsorship for GOCOP conferences.

This idea will ensure that no one will not be able to bring at least one sponsor for GOCOP conference every year. After all if one can chase 1,000 and two chasing 10,000, the entire GOCOP members that are now over 100 should be able to chase the whole world.

I’m looking forward to share more ideas with you on the next stage of amazing growth for GOCOP.

I hope that those in the diaspora and others that may not be chanced to physically vote will ensure that they exercise their civil responsibility electronically, because it’s all about the choice we make.

Stay blessed.
