Like a navigator charting new waters, Dr. Mrs. Chizoba Anyika, Convener of the Ocean Wide Tourism Initiative (OWTI), is steering attention toward Nigeria’s vast coastline as a source of economic revival and youth empowerment.
Through her initiative, she advocates for investment-driven employment opportunities across the nation’s littoral states, aiming to turn the blue economy into a hub of sustainable growth.
Speaking at their quarterly sensitization and enlightenment outreach, she stated that Nigeria’s coastline, stretching over 850 kilometers, is like an untapped treasure chest, rich in natural resources, tourism potential, and trade routes, yet long overlooked. While the waves continue to shape the shores, Dr. Anyika is working to ensure they also shape opportunities for young Nigerians.
The Ocean Wide Tourism Initiative seeks to bridge the gap between potential and practice by attracting private investment, promoting coastal tourism, and creating pathways for youth entrepreneurship. Like a lighthouse guiding vessels through fog, her vision cuts through the uncertainty of unemployment, offering direction and purpose to Nigeria’s growing youth population.
Dr. Anyika’s strategy goes beyond job creation. It is a blueprint for sustainable development, balancing economic expansion with environmental stewardship. In her words, “We must treat our oceans not as dumping grounds but as doorways to prosperity,” she emphasizes this message that resonates with global efforts to promote responsible use of marine resources.
The Initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focusing on decent work, economic growth, and life below water. It also mirrors global trends where coastal regions are becoming new engines of national economies, driving innovation and tourism.
Participants say that under Dr. Anyika’s leadership, the Ocean Wide Tourism Initiative is positioning Nigeria to harness its blue economy much like oil was once harnessed — but with sustainability at its core. “Our youth are our greatest assets,” she notes, “and the ocean is their next frontier.”
By spotlighting investment opportunities and advocating collaboration among stakeholders, Dr. Mrs. Chizoba Anyika is setting sail on a journey that could redefine employment and enterprise in Nigeria’s littoral regions. If her vision gains the momentum it deserves, the tides could indeed be turning — carrying thousands of young Nigerians toward a brighter, more sustainable shore.
